Message from the Chairman

It has been a long summer; I can’t remember when it has not rained for so long. Of course, by the time you receive this it’s probably rained so much we will be wishing for dryer weather. It was another record year for Oregon. With around 70 million pounds likely to be harvested this year and a shift to larger volumes going fresh we are seeing our industry continue to rapidly change change.

With change comes the need to reevaluate goals and priorities. There are three key areas we see that concern the industry today. Each of you have an important and valued point of view; I would like to invite you to join us at our commission meeting Tuesday, November 13 to hear and discuss these important issues.

1. Establishing the Endowed Professorship position for the berry industry at OSU; the future of the Extension program and facilities; generating new talent for our industry.
   
   
2. Market development, regional, local and international.
   
   
3. Research priorities; public blueberry breeding program; cultural issues; food safety and insect and disease issues.

This will be a time to hear about what is currently happening, hear about possible ideas and discuss direction as an industry. As we move forward, our industry needs to be in sync. Working together increases our chances of success. Please join us and participate in this valuable discussion.
